Recap: Pangos Sweet 16
This past weekend I went down to Corona, CA and entered the newly built Players Edge gym to watch the Pangos Sweet 16 event put on by Dinos Trignos, here goes some players that stood out at this event.
2012 Guard Calaen Robinson - Standing at 6-foot-3 Robinson has a nice frame for a D-1 point guard. Robinson a pure lefty can handle the ball well, not great but he can shot the ball with the best in his class. He still needs to understand that at the next level most coaches would prefer to see him play the point guard position so he still needs to learn how to make the right pass and learn how to get his teammates involved.
2014 Guard Stanley Johnson – freshman standout for Mater Dei was just that for his Belmont Shore team when I watched him play. Showing off a variety off moves from knocking down a 15 footer and taking his defender to the cup with a nasty cross over that reminded me of a young Kemba Walker. Johnson, stands at about 6-foot-4, he has one of the most mature bodies I have scene for a freshman in high school. After watching Johnson play he has one of the highest Ceilings for any player in the 2014 class.
2015 Guard Tyler Dorsey – You can tell Dorsey is still trying to learn what he has as far as using his lengthy 6-foot-4 body, after watching him dominate players his own age it was good to Dorsey play with and against some older competition. Although he didn’t come close to dominating like he does against players his age Dorsey did show that he doesn’t back down from anybody. He is going to be an interesting prospect to watch over the next 4 summers.
2012 Forward Grant Jerrett – Arizona commit, still has one of the best first steps that I have scene for a big man at the high school level. Jarrett, showed off a couple moves on the offensive side and the defensive side was a force blocking shots and grabbing rebounds. Jerrett is going to be special at Arizona and before he gets there I look for Jarrett to break the 2 year hiatus from a California player in the McDonalds game, he’s that good.
2013 Guard Eric Cooper Jr. – Arizona commit, I wrote last month that the first thing I noticed when I ran into Cooper was he lost weight and a significant amount. After being injured for most of his freshman and sophomore year cooper might just be back to the kid I watched dominate as an 8th grader. This weekend he showed off that 15-foot jumper that he always had. He also showed off his handles by driving to the whole with ease. Still not quick enough for a D-1 guard, but you can tell that he is working hard to get back to 100%. After the game I sat down with Cooper to talk about how he was feeling he told me he was about 80% back and is just working hard to get back to being 100%.
Some other players that stood out, 2013 Arizona State commit Maurice Kirby and 2012 forward David Andoh.
Recruiting News.
Even though he didnt play Gabe York showed up to support his Compton Magic family, York told me that UCONN assistant Kevin Ollie is recruiting him hard to become a Husky. Ollie who is originally from the Southern California area so its only fitting that he is recruiting York.
2012 Calaen Robinson told me that BYU is starting to pick up its recruitment on him and he feels they will offer soon.
